The Quarry Gator Swim Team is open to all club members 5-18 years of age. Dates for tryouts, practices, and swim meets are listed below. Tryouts are required only for new swimmers to the team. The tryout will consist of the swimmer completing the following requirements:
- 1 length of the pool (25 meters) swimming freestyle and 1 length of backstroke.
The tryout is to ensure that each swimmer is able to participate with the team and to assess the swimmer for placement in the appropriate training group.
All swimmers are assigned to a training group that will be based on their individual ability level. Families will be contacted for group placement by prior to the first practice of the season.
A parent newsletter will be sent via email during the first week of practice to inform parents of swim meet dates, volunteers needed for meets, and other pertinent information.
Inclement Weather Policy: Check the website homepage and your email for updates or call Lakesdie after 3:00pm for practice status due to weather.

Quarry Gators Families,
First of all, I sincerely hope this message finds you in good physical and mental health. You are receiving this email because you have been registered for a summer, fall, or winter session of Quarry Gators in the last two calendar years. Please read on for important updates and FAQs regarding our beloved Quarry Gators swim team:
SUMMER PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
It is with a very heavy heart that I announce that, at this time, there are no plans to hold a summer Quarry Gators program. Our parent representatives, Jackie and Isaac Beckley, with the full support of the Parent Committee and myself notified the Louisville Swim Association on May 20 that we will not be participating. On June 1, the LSA Board of Directors elected to freeze all league activity until the summer 2021 season. The LSA also elected to grant any graduating seniors in the class of 2020 to have one more year of competition eligibility in the summer of 2021.
Please know that this does not mean there will be no swim team, stroke clinic, or other youth programming at Lakeside Swim Club in the future. However, these activities can only occur once pertinent government restrictions are lifted and the time and circumstances are conducive for safer arrangements.
On March 13, I notified families that our winter program was ending early due to the COVID-19 pandemic and remarked that it was one of the largest, best-attended, and most memorable sessions of Quarry Gators Lakeside has seen to date! I am proud of all of our swimmers, their parents, and my coaches for making our indoor season such a fantastic success.
On May 19, the Lakeside Board of Directors published a letter to club members, including the following highlights:
Lakeside Swim Club will not be opening on the originally scheduled opening day of May 23, 2020, due to current government guidelines.
Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky’s Public Health Commissioner, recommends that public pools stay closed at least through early summer, citing the inability to maintain the social distancing guidelines needed to help contain the virus. This refers to recreational swimming which largely occurs in our quarry lake.
Currently, we do not plan on preparing the quarry lake for swimming in 2020 due to the significant financial investment, and at this point it is unclear how much use would be allowed over the course of the season.
We would love to have recreational swimming as soon as we are allowed and have a plan to keep all of our members safe.
On May 26, June 2, and June 9, more letters from our board were published, along with a very detailed FAQ on Lakeside Swim Club’s summer 2020 facilities and membership procedures. Highlights from the FAQ with additional details pertaining to our program are below:
WILL LAKESIDE PRO-RATE MEMBERSHIP FEES IF I ACTIVATE IN DECEMBER?
No, all dues are based on an annual membership.
QUARRY GATORS — this means that if you are inactive by the time we restart programming, you will be eligible to register once you have paid dues for the children you wish to participate. If you are inactive once we return to programming, you MUST reactivate your membership before participating.
CAN I BRING MY CHILDREN?
At this time, Lakeside will only allow members 18 years of age or older to enter.
QUARRY GATORS — please note: this is (as many things are) subject to change as government restrictions change and club policies are adjusted by the careful review of our Board of Directors and management staff. We love and miss all of our young swimmers and look forward to creating opportunities for them to swim when the time is right and the arrangements are safe.
WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES ENFORCED BY LAKESIDE SWIM CLUB?
Members must stay six feet apart, minimize close contact with others, no handshakes or hugs, wear face coverings unless exercising, wash hands frequently, no loitering.
QUARRY GATORS — these social distancing measures are by government mandate and largely factor into every decision made by our board and staff… whatever programming may come will be subject to this same level of scrutiny and safety
SO… WHAT CAN WE DO IN THE MEANTIME???
I have thought long and hard about how we can continue to engage our community of Quarry Gators and have consulted with our parent committee and coaches to develop the following:
QUARRY GATORS DRAWING/COLORING CONTEST
We warmly invite all Quarry Gators to draw their very best impression of our beloved Quarry Gator. Awards will be given for age groups by grade level — elementary, middle, and high school. For children who prefer to color a blank Quarry Gator logo, please print the attached document. There is no limit to the number of drawings that can be submitted and awards will be determined by a panel of QG coaches and Lakeside Masters swimmers. All submissions will be put on display in the club and shared with this email list upon contest completion.
All entries are due to Coach William by July 15. Please write (1) your name and (2) your age neatly on the back of your submission.

WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR COACH
As you all know, our coaches are the heart and soul of our program. Year after year, Lizzy and I do our best to recruit and hand-pick the most dedicated and professional young men and women to coach and lead our swimmers. Informing them they would not be working for Lakeside this summer was one of the hardest parts of preparing for the “summer of COVID” and we’d like to ask our families to do us a favor to cheer them up.
We are inviting all Quarry Gators families to write a letter, make a card, or get more creative in sending a thoughtful message to any of the following coaches telling them how much you appreciate them, how proud you are of their hard work in school this year, and how much you miss them and look forward to seeing them when the time is right. Please email Coach William for a roster of coaches. Please use the same methods listed in the contest description above to deliver well wishes to our coaches.
LIVE STREAMED STRETCHES & DRYLANDS
Join Coach William, Coach Ellie, and Coach Kate on Fridays at 10am as they host virtual team stretches, drylands, and other fun fitness activities live from Lakeside Swim Club. Activities will be suitable for all ages and abilities and… of course… we will have a grand time staying healthy together!
WATER SAFETY PRESENTATION BY COACH WIL JACKSON
Please take the time to watch the result of Coach Wil’s senior service project at the J. Graham Brown School– a video and PowerPoint presentation on water safety, developed for all ages and presented in a virtual format. Wil worked closely with me to develop this project based around American Red Cross curriculum for teaching children about water safety. Much to our dismay, Wil was unable to give this presentation in person as his project proposal originally called for. We thought sharing his project with our families would be an excellent way to hold true to his service promise.
Presentation and worksheets attached.
You can thank Wil for his hard work by sending him a message at [email protected].
Phew, that’s a lot to swallow! I will close with this:
No part of any of our lives have been normal lately. I have missed seeing you, your children and my coaches as much as I know we all miss the water and each other. Were we not amidst a global pandemic, instead of processing thousands of membership refunds and checking temperatures as adult members enter our club, I would have been personally greeting each and every smiling face of our 225-athlete strong team. I would have welcomed smiling, sunburned faces at the instructional pool gate with a high-five and a “welcome back” and passed out “thank you for your hard work” fist bumps at the exit gate.
As we move forward in these great times of uncertainty, please do me, the Lakeside Swim Club staff, and yourself a favor and follow these two “rules to live by” in the summer of COVID:
Be flexible — these are not normal times. We are working hard to provide our team with the best options we see fit. We are looking forward to a brighter, safer future for our beloved Quarry Gators family. Rest assured that your Lakeside Swim club staff are doing their best to accommodate your needs during these unprecedented times.
Have and show grace — Please remember to have grace with yourselves and your children. We have all been out of the water and our normal lives and routines for so long. When the time is right, don’t expect to come back to our program exactly where we left off — things will no doubt be different. Remember to be kind to your bodies and your minds when we finally get back into our new routines. We will be here for you.
